SIR — I was concerned to read the inaccurate and misleading comments made at Watchet Town Council's meeting, which were reported in the Free Press on March 15.

Somerset County Council has no plans to close Watchet Library.

It published ambitious proposals for Somerset Library Service in December and has recently committed £250,000 of additional money for buying books and materials.

We've also been asking local communities for ideas about their libraries – for example, that libraries could act as community hubs or that we could work in partnership with local groups to deliver services.

The proposals have been positively received and we're committed to working with Somerset communities to create an innovative library service that's fit for the future.

It was also inaccurate for a councillor to say that we didn't carry out an equalities impact assessment about our proposals for the Library Enquiry Service.

We did, and we're also working hard to find the best means of ensuring that we continue to meet the information needs of Somerset people in the best and most cost-effective ways.

Cllr David Hall,

Cabinet Member,

Somerset County Council.
