PEOPLE in West Somerset with alcohol and drugs problems can tap into a new internet service offering help on their doorstep.

Hope Online provides the chance to talk to qualified and experienced counsellors in one-to-one sessions as part of a self-help rehabilitation programme.

The initiative, aimed at helping people to take the first steps to rebuild their lives, has been launched by Minehead's Hope Centre.

The charity is also partly financing it along with the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

Hope Centre trustee Clare Walsh said: "This is a real step forward for our local West Somerset area as previously it was necessary to travel to Taunton to access rehabilitation support."

Hope Online will be available at the charity's base at Minehead Baptist Church Hall in Parks Lane.

Sessions will take place on Mondays from 11am to 2pm and Tuesdays from 10.30am to 2pm.

Help with basic skills in using the computer to access the online support will also be available and in addition there will be information about benefits, housing and employment opportunities.

"Hope Online takes place in a warm, relaxing meeting place where people can get support and encouragement," said Ms Walsh.

"There is no charge - just a big welcome."

Sessions can be booked ahead or people can just turn up and a free hot meal and drink will also be on offer.

All counselling will be confidential and with someone who is a member of the Health Professionals Council, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

The Hope Centre already provides help and support for homeless, lonely or disadvantaged people in the local community.
