A NEW cup in memory of Samford Brett Gardening Club president and founder member Florence Plant was presented to the overall winner of this year’s summer show.

The Florence Plant Cup was donated by her sons and its first recipient was Richard Currie whose prowess was in fruit and cookery.

It was presented by club president Ross McKee, who spoke warmly of Florence’s great love of gardening and of her legacy.

Growers, bakers, cooks and artisans were among those who displayed the fruits of their labours in St George’s Church and the village hall, and there was a good crowd to view the exhibits.

“It always amazes me how much talent there is in such a small area and the willingness of people to take part in this event”, said club secretary Martine Cadby.

This year saw a new twist. Some weeks ago, the club came up with the ‘great potato challenge’ and those who rose to the challenge were issued with a bucket. A number and a seed potato.

Planted out, in all weathers, the seedlings gradually grew and on Saturday morning they were harvested, weighed and Steven Pearce smashed the competition. Steven also excelled in handicrafts.
