ACTING Somerset County Council chief executive Pat Flaherty has officially been given the authority's top job. He stepped up as acting chief following the departure of Sheila Wheeler. She received a £40,000 pay-off earlier this year after leaving her £160,000 a year post. She had been off work since November - initially on sick leave and was then said to be "not in the office at this time". Her absence sparked widespread speculation and the reason behind her departure is still not clear, although it is understood to centre on a complaint made against both officers and councillors. Mr Flaherty's appointment as chief executive was confirmed at Wednesday's full council meeting. Speaking on Wednesday, council leader Cllr John Osman said: "Pat has impressed us all leading the council through the biggest disaster this council has faced with the major flooding and taking a personal lead in achieving a balanced budget in the tightest of financial times over the past six months. " have always looked to promote talent from within wherever appropriate and I have no doubt that Pat will prove to be a successful and popular appointment." Mr Flaherty said he was thrilled to take on the role. "I am excited and proud to be the council chief executive and to represent a staff group which is truly fantastic, dedicated and willing to go the extra mile for our residents. "I want the best we can provide and I will work hard on behalf of everyone to achieve that. "We have huge opportunities over the coming years and we need to aim high. "I also want to listen to as many people as I can across Somerset to hear the views and ideas of our hardworking staff, residents and communities over the coming months to hear their views and ideas," he said. Mr Flaherty, who takes up the post immediately, will receive a slightly lower salary than that enjoyed by Ms Wheeler - he will be paid £150,000 a year.
