A QUIET yet ‘meaningful tradition’ has been making a big difference in the lives of older residents in West Somerset.

Monthly tea parties organised by Re-engage West Somerset co-ordinator Renata Urkay have proven much more than gatherings just to offer a cup of tea.

They have been providing friendship, laughter, and a much-needed sense of community for elderly guests who may otherwise face isolation.

Re-engage is a national charity dedicated to supporting older people over the age of 75 years and runs a variety of social initiatives across the UK.

However, in West Somerset, the tea parties have become a particularly cherished part of local life helping to break the cycle of isolation.

The events are hosted in volunteers’ homes or community spaces and bring together small groups of elderly guests to enjoy delicious homemade cakes, warm conversation, and a welcoming atmosphere.

But, behind each successful tea party is a team of dedicated volunteers - and right now, Re-engage needs more help.

In particular, it urgently needs more volunteer drivers, a shortage of which is one of the key challenges the charity is facing.

Volunteer drivers play a vital role collecting guests from their homes, staying during the event to offer a helping hand, and enjoying the food together, and then ensuring each guest arrives home safely afterward.

Ms Urkay said: “It is not a big commitment, just a few hours once a month, but the impact is immeasurable.

“If you, or somebody you know, could spare a few hours a month to help brighten the lives of older people in West Somerset, we would love to hear from you.”

One resident who has been benefiting from the tea parties is Denise, whose daughter Julie said of her volunteer driver: “I have just spoken to mum on the phone and she said she had a lovely time.

“The hosts were lovely, the food was great, and the views were beautiful.

“She was telling me about the lovely ride out and what a good driver you are.

“So, once again, thank you so much for all you do.”

The volunteer drivers pick up one or more older guests and drive them to a local tea party and stay to help serve refreshments and chat with guests and take them home again afterward.

Ms Urkay said: “Re-engage provides full support, training and guidance for all volunteers.

“You will need a friendly manner, a reliable car, and a few spare hours each month.

“In return, you will gain the satisfaction of making a real difference, and maybe even make a few new friends of your own.

“Together, we can keep the tea flowing and the friendships growing.”

A spokesperson for the charity said: “Older people tell us that our volunteer-led activities make them happier and more able to trust others.

“Our vision is a world where nobody is ever too old to make friends and enjoy social interaction.”
