WEST Somerset Green Party is organising music by candlelight in Roadwater Village Hall on Saturday (March 24) to mark Earth Hour – a global show of commitment to the planet.

Rock and Joel – Andy Rock and Joel Tail – will strike up an acoustic set when the lights are turned off in the hall at 8.30pm.

The event is free and open to all who bring along the tipple of their choice and a plate to contribute to the candlelit supper.

Earth Hour is a World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature campaign to raise global awareness and action for a healthy planet.

It is marked in more than 180 countries and territories, uniting millions of people around the world as Earth faces the dual challenge of climate change and plummeting biodiversity.

The aim is to mobilise individuals, businesses and governments to be a part of the conversation and the solutions needed to build a healthy, sustainable future – and planet – for all.

Marco Lambertini, director general, WWF International, said: “Biodiversity and nature underpin our lives, our economies, our health, our well-being, our happiness. It is the foundation of our living planet.

“Today, as we push the planet and its natural systems to the edge, Earth Hour is our chance to use our power, as individuals and as a collective, to demand and take action to protect this web of life in return for all it gives us. For the benefit of all life on Earth and of our own future.”

A website at connect2earth.org  has been set up for anyone to share what biodiversity and nature means to them in the places they live in, and to find out more about it.

At Roadwater, doors open at 8pm, and further information is available from the website or Cherry Bird on 01984 641052.
