CROWCOMBE mum Jane Williams may look like the belle of the ball but it is an image most people who know her - including her family and husband - very rarely get to see. Furniture maker Jane, aged 39, is renowned for never wearing a dress, preferring instead to sport a more casual look of jeans or overalls. Now friends have encouraged her to put her loathing of all things dress-like to good use in a bid to raise hundreds of pounds for a charity which has supported her seriously ill two-year-old daughter Lucy. Next week she will be sponsored to wear a different dress of someone else's choice each day in aid of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA). Lucy, aged two, pictured below, suffers from the rare lung disorder which causes the pulmonary arteries to thicken and constrict. Although she can currently lead a relatively normal life, she has to have medication pumped directly into her body 24 hours a day and carries her lifesaving equipment around with her in a special children's backpack. Jane said: "She's been in and out of hospital a fair bit and was born with two collapsed lungs. "Her lungs constrict and the medication helps to dilate the blood vessels but it puts her heart under an enormous amount of strain." She said most onlookers would not be aware Lucy was even ill, thinking her backpack was simply a fashion accessory. Lucy regularly attends Crowcombe Pre-school and Jane is hoping many of the mums will support her fundraising effort. "Anyone who knows me knows I never wear dresses. I've only ever worn a dress twice - when I got married and once when I went to a ball. "I suppose I was a bit of a tomboy at school, then I did woodwork and now I'm a furniture maker by trade so I'm used to being in a workshop environment," Jane said. She is hoping her dislike of dresses - which also runs to skirts - will help to raise hundreds of pounds for the PHA. Anyone who would like to support Jane can make a donation direct to the PHA either via the website http://www.pha-uk.com">www.pha-uk.com or by sending a cheque made payable to PHA-UK to the association at PO Box 2760, Lewes, Sussex, BN8 4WA.
