FIREFIGHTERS from eight stations across Somerset were battling a blaze which broke out in a flat in Cannington in the early hours of Saturday (August 23).

Roads were closed and the public were being advised by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue to avoid the area while its crews dealt with the incident.

The fire broke out in a terraced property in High Street shortly after 4 am.

The first fire crews to arrive on scene reported the roof space of the building ‘was well alight’.

They immediately called for help from two more fire engines and the incident was escalated with multiple resources mobilised.

All of the people living in the property were confirmed as having been safely evacuated.

Firefighters attended from Nether Stowey and Williton, as well as Taunton, Bridgwater, Burnham On Sea, Street, Yeovil, and Martock.

A DSFR spokesperson said: “Please avoid the area as roads are closed and firefighting operations are still ongoing.”

The fire crews were using four sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, a safety jet, and an aerial ladder to fight the blaze and were working to isolate utility services to the property.
