A FUND-raising drive to repair a West Somerset school’s ageing swimming pool has hit its £45,000 target.

The indoor pool was built more than 30 years ago in Knights Templar School, Watchet, and has suffered wear and tear over the decades since.

A ‘Splashout’ fund-raising committee has been raising money to ensure the pool continues to provide recreation and learning facilities for residents and children in the area.

A spokesperson said: “The committee, with the unwavering support of our community, has raised the necessary funds to repair the wear caused by time and heavy use.

“Through the power of our collective efforts and individual donations, combined with backing from Watchet Town Council, we have attracted generous contributions from several local trusts.

“This achievement is a testament to our community’s strength when we come together for a common cause.

“The ability to swim is a lifelong skill for all ages, bringing with it safety, health benefits, confidence, fun, and enjoyment.”

Joining the celebrations at the weekend was local MP Rachel Gilmour, who met pool committee leader Jim Butterworth, school governors vice-chairman Jennifer Thomas, headteacher Laura Weaver, and town Cllr Sean Terrett.

Mrs Gilmour said: “I am delighted to be here at Knights Templar following the news they have raised the necessary funds to carry out vital works to maintain and improve their pool facilities.

“The pool plays a crucial role in the Watchet community, especially considering it is both owned and run by the school and nursery, and so I am pleased my office was able to assist the committee.

“Swimming pools like Knights Templar are integral to the local community, and I will do all I can to champion projects like this in our constituency, where there are so many benefits for local people.

“This really shows the fantastic things that can happen when the community comes together.”
