Pressure from Hertford Road residents in Yeovil has led to a local authority earmarking some of its own land to provide an 11-space car park.

The land in question is located behind 16 - 26 Hertford Road, and the project is the result of residents objecting to an access route being constructed two years ago.

Back then, South Somerset District Council was approached by a Hertford Road resident who sought help in improving access to one of the houses.

This was to aid transportation of a disabled boy and his medical equipment. The council constructed an access way by using part of its own land at the end of the road.

For some reason, a number of other residents disliked the arrangement and the access way has since been removed. A consultation exercise took place to find out if an alternative arrangement was acceptable to residents.

No objections were received but it was in the course of this exercise that residents expressed a desire for more parking spaces.

At this stage, the council had doubts about going ahead with the alternative arrangement before having examined the possibility of "killing two birds with one stone".

As a result, plans have been presented for a package consisting of an 11-space car park and an access way to the house in which the disabled boy lives.

The total cost has been estimated to £11,000, with Yeovil Without Parish Council having indicated a willingness to contribute £10,000.

District councillors recently decided to set the ball rolling by applying for planning permission.
