West Somerset’s position on the Social Mobility Index – 324 out of 324 – should concern us all (Free Press December 1).

Too often our children are faced with a poor choice for their future - low paid local jobs or moving away as soon as they can.

The report highlights expensive housing and poor transport links as two key factors.

On housing, perhaps our new joint council could make its number one priority for West Somerset to build houses for genuinely affordable rent.

On transport, a scheduled rail service to Taunton, talked about for 20 years, could do much to give access to better jobs, reduce our isolation and help our sense of wellbeing.

The sensible proposals of the Minehead Rail Link Group – a public service as well as our fine heritage railway – can deliver that. Please, enough talking, just do it.
