A mobile advice service van is visiting Minehead to offer information, advice and aid for people with sight loss.

The Mobile Advisory Service (MAS) will be at Minehead Morrisons this Monday until 3.30 pm . Appointments are not necessary to attend.

The service travels to over 40 locations across Somerset providing support to the visually impaired. Donna, the MAS operator, offers a number of services, including basic low vision assessments, and giving referrals for technical and emotional support.

The support van will be at the Watchet Coach Park on Tuesday February 28 and Cannington, by the Brook, on Thursday March 9.

The scheme is one of many set up by the charity Somerset Sight. Somerset Sight works to help the estimated 19,000 people living across Somerset with sight impairment.

As part of that mission the charity runs a voluntary visiting service. The service sees a volunteer visit a person with visual impairments on a regular basis to provide emotional support.

Somerset Sight CEO Jacki Sopwith said: "The visiting service provides a lifeline for many people with visual impairment."

But Jacki told the Free Press that more volunteers are needed to meet the demand.

She said being a voluntary visitor is a rewarding volunteering opportunity: "You aren't just sitting at a screen or shaking a bucket, with us you can meet interesting people and become friends with them."
