A man was rescued following a search and rescue operation by coastguard and police in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The Watchet coastguard joined Minehead crews in the search for a missing man after being called in to assist by Avon and Somerset Police.

Watchet coastguard carried out a search of Minehead beach out to the low water mark.

Efforts were bolstered by support from the police helicopter, which aided in the search along the shoreline and inland towards Dunster beach.

Just before 2 am the missing man was found in the search area by a police dog handler, where they were joined by the coastguard within minutes of the discovery.

The coastguard confirmed the man was safe and well, before personnel were stood down and returned to base.

In a statement posted to social media, HM Watchet Coastguard said the operation was an example of a successful multi-agency operation.

Tuesday's deployment follows a successful deployment on Monday afternoon, when the coastguard rescued two adults who had become stuck below Hurlstone Point by the rising tide.
