'MIRACLE' babies Theo and Jake Shopland have left intensive care and have moved into a low dependency unit at Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital. The story of the identical twins' fight for life after they being born 11 weeks prematurely was revealed in last week's Free Press. And this week their parents Michelle and Adrian Shopland said the boys were doing so well that they had been transferred from the hospital's neo-natal intensive care wing. The couple, who live in Porlock, had endured months of worry after discovering that the babies had twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, sharing the same placenta and some of the same circulation. The result, an imbalanced flow of blood from one twin to another, meant that Jake, who was born weighing 2lbs 9 ounces, thrived at the expense of Theo, who weighed in at just 1lb 15 ounces. Incredibly, despite a major setback in their first week when Theo almost died, the tiny babies are thriving. Both are breathing unaided and Michelle, who has been expressing her milk since they were born just over three weeks ago, was able to breastfeed Jake for the first time last weekend. "It was so fantastic to have the contact with him," she said. "It was just lovely. "We were so thrilled when we arrived at the hospital on Saturday and discovered that they had been moved out of intensive care. They are doing really well." The couple, who have two other children - Liam, aged eight and three-year-old Ajay - have been told that the twins will be able to come home when they can 'demand feed'. "That may not be until after Christmas but who knows, they might just surprise everyone," said Michelle.
