RENOVATION of a West Somerset war memorial for Service personnel who fought in the Far East against Japan during the Second World War has been completed, during the 80th anniversary year of VJ Day.

It was 26 years ago this month that a Burma Star memorial was dedicated in Blenheim Gardens, Minehead, but it had started to deteriorate and was in need of restorative work.

Town clerk Ben Parker said: “The council took the opportunity to ensure the memorial was restored to a condition befitting its importance.

“Works included a professional clean, careful restoration of the engraved inscriptions, and repainting of the Burma Star insignia.

“This project reflects our commitment to honouring the memory of those who served and ensuring future generations can continue to pay their respects.”
