MORE than 50 people took part in a spontaneous flashmob line dance in Minehead at the weekend as part of a worldwide initiative.
The Wellington Square event became part of a movement connecting the global dance community through shared choreography.
It was suggested by the Line Dance Foundation (LDF), which is still collating the number of people who joined and all the countries and communities where events were held.
A spokesperson said: “A lot of practice and planning had been put in place by the six line dance groups throughout the local area, and in consultation with the local town council.
“The rain held off, and everybody had great fun, with a supportive, interested audience clapping along.”

Locally, line dance clubs meet in Minehead’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, Carhampton Recreation Ground Hall on Tuesdays, Allerford Village Hall on Wednesdays, and in Watchet Community Centre on Thursdays.
Dancers taking part in Minehead on Saturday (May 2) were asked to donate £1 to an LDF online appeal which has so far raised more than £12,000 of its £14,000 target to support and strengthen the line dance community worldwide.
The International Line Dance Flashmob idea was born during the Covid year of 2020 to give dancers something to look forward to and a reason to celebrate their shared passion even during lockdown.
Hundreds of groups took part this year throughout the UK and Canada and other countries around the world ranging from individual dancers to groups with several hundred participants.
There was even special choreography versions for children, wheelchair users, and ‘arms-only’ dancers, so everybody could be part of the flashmob regardless of age or ability.
A LDF spokesperson said: “The Line Dance Foundation message travelled further, louder, and more joyfully than we ever imagined, and the donations are still coming in.”
