WORK has started on improving Minehead’s Eastern Esplanade with new landscaping, planting, lighting and play areas.
The aim is to transform the seafront in time for this year’s main summer visitor season.
The development is being project-managed by West Somerset Council and steered by Minehead Coastal Communities Team with input from residents and visitors through consultations over the past year.
A council spokesman said: “The work forms part of the Enterprising Minehead project and will complement developments which have already been put in place such as interactive guided walks, shelter refurbishments and summertime markets at the old harbour.
“The Esplanade enhancements aim to provide more attractive space for residents as well as attracting new visitors. Work is expected to be completed within 12 weeks.”
Katrina Midgley, chairman of Minehead Coastal Communities Team, said: “The public response to last year’s consultation was tremendous.
“This has not only helped to formulate the current proposals but has also given us some great ideas for future phases.”
The council spokesman added: “Community input into this project has been invaluable and has helped to shape the final designs.
“Once in place, Minehead will have a seafront to be proud of and which will tempt people to spend more time here and keep returning.”
