THERE was a real eye-opener for civic dignitaries, young people and other invited guests on Saturday when West Somerset's multi-million pound dedicated youth facility officially opened its doors.

The Minehead EYE was built with help from a £3.2 million grant through the myplace programme and £250,000 from West Somerset Council, while the land is leased from Somerset County Council for a peppercorn rent.

Saturday's full opening ceremony kicked off with skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMXers, before a round of emotional speeches from those involved in the scheme.

Visitors were able to watch young people taking part in circus skills and face painting activities, tabletop football and dance mat competitions and even breakdance workshops for the more adventurous!

They were also able to tour the facility, which includes a purpose-built extreme sports hall, as well as resources to foster creativity in sports, art, music and media, such a recording studio, DJ booth and rehearsal space.

The centre also provides a place for young people to meet up with friends in a relaxed atmosphere.
