TOWN councillors in Minehead are being asked to lease a small plot of land in the King George V Playing Field to provide a secure outside play area for nursery children.

Cheeky Cherubs Day Nursery and Pre-school, which uses the Alcombe Children’s Centre, hopes to be granted a 25-year lease on a triangle of grassland in front of the building.

It would then put up a six feet high palisade fence and use the grassed area for outdoor childcare facilities in a safe environment.

Town clerk Ben Parker said: “Due to its relatively small size and isolated position, the land has limited recreational value in comparison to the wider playing field.”

Mr Parker said the nursery would take on maintenance responsibility for the land, saving the council about £500 to £1,000 a year.

Councillors will make a decision on the request when they meet in the Irnham Road community centre on Tuesday (June 17).

Cheeky Cherubs provides full day care and learning experiences for children aged up to five years and has 72 places available from 7.30 am to 6 pm daily for 51 weeks of the year.

Ofsted education inspectors rated it ‘outstanding’ when they last visited in 2023.

Lead inspector Margaret Dobbs said: “Staff are excellent, respectful role models with high expectations.

“As a result, children’s behaviour is exemplary, and they are kind and helpful to each other.

“Parents are involved in every aspect of their children’s learning and development and speak highly of the passion and commitment of managers and staff.”
