SIR — Thank you to Alex Slater for his kind words about the efforts to keep him and other drivers around Washford safe and on the move on the rainy Saturday night of November 24 (Your Letters November 30).

I would like to mention the Atkins staff attached to Somerset Highways and working with Somerset County Council officers.

They were actually the men on the ground directing drivers, arranging shelter and ensuring alternative routes were open, rather than the Environment Agency as Alex mentioned in his letter to you.

It was a phenomenally busy period for everybody working on the roads and rivers, and I would not want their efforts going unrecognised.

Geoff Dight,

Highways Network Manager,

Somerset County Council.
