The shameful withdrawal of funding for public toilets in West Somerset continues.

Ranging from the much-needed facilities at Selworthy offering relief to the large number of tourists and visitors to those situated in a busy car park opposite the council offices in Williton.

This seems indefensible in light of the Local Government Act 2000 which imposes a duty on councils to provide a community strategy which “should aim to enhance the quality of life of local communities and contribute to the achievement of sustainable development in the UK through action to improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of the area and its inhabitants”.

West Somerset Council has interpreted this to mean the provision of toilets does not enhance the quality of life.

This woeful decision needs addressing now before we get more medieval public services.
