GARDENERS across West Somerset were recognised at an awards ceremony in Alcombe.
The green fingered residents from Magna Housing had taken part in their annual gardening competition, and the various winners are pictured at the presentation of certificates and prizes at the Silvermead community room.
The overall winners of the Tim Chilcott Cup were Mr and Mrs Matravers from Bridgetown – and not for the first time.
“We’ve entered the competition about five times now and we have won the cup before, but it was still a real surprise to win it this year as well as a great honour,” said Mrs Matravers.
“I wasn’t going to enter this year, but other people encouraged me so I decided to give it a go. I’m really glad I did now.
“We plant the garden from scratch every year with everything either from seed or from small plug plants. Then at the end of the year it all goes on the compost heap before we start again next year.”
One of the judges, Magna resident Derek Cridland, said: “Lots of people entered the garden competition this year and there were some really good gardens so it was quite hard to judge. Everyone clearly put a lot of hard work in.
“It would be good to encourage other people to enter next year, particularly younger people. When we go on walkabouts round the areas we see lots of lovely gardens, but they don’t enter.
“It doesn’t cost anything to enter and this year anyone who too part got a voucher to spend.”
