July 9th 1870
* Thomas Ash, a labourer, of Crowcombe, who was kicked in the leg by a horse, hd to have the limb amputated at Williton Workhouse by Doctors Frost and Reynett and their assistants.
* A man in Dulverton engaged the town crier to announce that he would not be answerable for any debts incurred by his wife.
* The Minehead branch of Stuckey’s Bank was transferred to new premises erected opposite the Market House by Mr John Pearse. “The building is an ornament to the town.”
100 years ago
July 10th 1920
* Stogursey Parish Council received from Lord St Audries the gift of an old English altar in memory of his late father, the first Baron St Audries. The altar was dedicated by the vicar, the Rev W J Stuart-Cramp.
* Minehead Urban Council asked the Cornish Salvage Company if Minehead could be included among places to which the company was sending old naval ships for breaking up.
* Prizes for the best kept allotments in Bishops Lydeard were awarded by the Flower Show Committee to DanielLock, Frederick Hooper and George Lock, in that order.
* Rain washed out most of Saturday’s cricket matches but one was played at Taunton between Somerset Stragglers and Somerset Staghounds. The Stragglers won by 157 to 138. Capt. W Pepper was the top scorer (44) for the Staghounds.
* Rain spoiled the sports that had been planned when the children of Exford day school were given a tea treat by the Rev A C and Mrs Carne.
50 years ago
July 11th 1970
* Plans for a new fire and police station in Dulverton were announced at an extraordinary meeting of the district council. Members agreed to contact the county surveyor to discuss the terms of the scheme.
* Preparations were underway for the introduction of pay and display parking in Minehead, which was planned to start in February 1971.
* Watchet councillors were told the Wansbrough Paper Mill intended to spend £50,000 on a scheme to combat pollution after complaints were raised about the ongoing problem of polluted rivers in Washford, caused by waste fro the mill.
* An 80-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Dunster. She had been suffocated by smoke from a small fire in the corner of her bedroom.
