SIR — I have just attended another meeting, as secretary of the Watchet Boat Owners Association, held in Watchet Harbour Marina (WHM) offices to address the continuing fight by the marina to overcome its ongoing problems, most not of its making. The marina gate has failed, it has been removed and is away for repair. Depending on discussions with insurers, it could be weeks or months before it can be re-installed. The marina quite rightly is involving the major stakeholders in trying to employ best practices to keep the marina operational. In addition, WHM is looking at both short and long term solutions to enable the marina to be mud free and successful business - rest assured, if they are unsuccessful in their efforts the marina will fail. And this will have a very negative effect on Watchet in general. It's not too strong a phrase to say the marina is in crisis. WHM has had meetings with West Somerset Council, our Member of Parliament, Watchet Harbour Advisory (WHAC) and other local groups, and from what I can see, actual support can be measured, as they say, " on the back of a cigarette packet". West Somerset Council is not honouring its obligations in dredging the outer harbour, a situation that is directly making the mud situation in the marina worse - not my words but those of experts in this field. Nobody at the meeting was aware of any support to marina problems by either our MP or the WHAC, the latter being a statuatory body that should be involved in these issues up to the hilt. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has also added its voice to the lack of support for the marina. Instead, last week's Free Press focused on what appears to be ongoing bad feeling between our MP and our council leader, where our council leader was airbrushed out of a group photograph on our MP's website. How sad is that? Strange, I thought they were both Conservatives elected to help the community. Well my message is simple to all these parties - stop waffling around and get on and do something positive to help Watchet Harbour Marina and Watchet through these difficult times. Less talking (if there is any) and more action, plans, targets and time frames please. Ray Ventura, Secretary, Watchet Boat Owners' Association.
