MINEHEAD’S iconic town hall clock will stay alive and ticking thanks to a successful Free Press appeal for volunteers to keep the wheels turning by winding the clock once a week.

Minehead BID took over winding the historic clock five years ago when Minehead Town Council sold the building and moved out. With the disbanding of BID two weeks ago, the hunt was on for someone to take over the job.

“It’s a ten-minute job once a week,” said, Graham Sizer, who shared the task with the late David Lethaby since 2018. “The clock is a hugely important part of the Minehead scene and it would have been a tragedy if we couldn’t have kept it going.

“But after an appeal in the Free Press asking for volunteers, a new team has been pulled together from retired residents and the weekly winding will be done on a rota basis.

“Now with a bit of luck, the clock will go on ticking along, as it has for the past 100 years.”
