SIR — I write to support the proposal to create a cycle path from Minehead to Blue Anchor.

I am a cycle tourist who enjoys the lanes of West Somerset, but the A39 is now so busy it creates problems for cyclists and motorists alike.

The cycle paths from Padstow in Cornwall and Barnstaple in Devon have attracted large numbers of tourists. More importantly, safe excursions for families or unaccompanied children to walk or ride in safety are possible.

To see families with young children riding together brings a smile to my face. The paths do not attract fast moving sportive cyclists but a more sedate type of rider.

Any local cyclist could access Minehead comfortably and pleasantly - it works both ways. It could attract more tourists to the ample facilities of Minehead, Blue Anchor and Watchet, and extend the season for some visitors to the advantage of local businesses.

I hope that objections can be sensibly overcome to encourage families and young riders to enjoy a wonderful pastime.

Len Gurnett,

Ellicombe.
