SIR — I remember how hard we worked for an indoor pool in the 1980s and the successful Swimming Pool Action Group eventually persuaded the district council to provide this important service. Everyone was so pleased when Aquasplash opened in June 1992. As a regular user of Aquasplash for the last 13 years, I see all ages and abilities enjoying the water - babies, toddlers, swimming lessons, schools swimming, the swimming club, public sessions, water fitness and special needs activities. I know of several people in their 80s who are regular attenders and I know from personal experience how gentle exercise in the water helped return me to fitness after a broken leg. Reading your columns, it would appear that there is a threat to close our pool prematurely because of maintenance problems. The council built Aquasplash for the people of West Somerset and if there are maintenance problems now then I ask why the council has not maintained our only public swimming pool properly. I am concerned that the user group meetings have been discontinued, which means that there is no longer any forum for discussing Aquasplash and the council can do what it likes without any need for consultation. Should we lose our pool, many schools will be unable to deliver the National Curriculum. Families will go for a swim and spend their money in surrounding towns. Is this what the council wants ? We hear there may be a new pool on the horizon, and the council has promised that there will be no break between Aquasplash closing and the new pool opening. Surely there should be evidence of planning for the new pool now, to ensure that a vital service to the community can be maintained. What a shame all the money recently spent on solicitors, architects, officer time and preliminary works for the aborted offices could not have been directed to ensure the future of our one and only public indoor pool. Aquasplash may not be perfect for everyone but it's given an enormous amount of pleasure to many. We should fight to retain it until a replacement is provided.
