SIR — Conservative councillor Colin Hill's contention that "we'll sort the council out" seems a little weak when it comes at the same time as the decision making process of West Somerset District Council is being questioned.

The decision making of the nine strong cabinet is regularly coming under fire. The latest is the selling-off of part of the Clanville nursery site for housing without the majority of the councillors being informed. This follows a host of strange decisions being taken by the Tory dominated council.

One of the architects of the new system of local government has already stated that the system is open to abuse by majority parties, and it seems that this is the position in West Somerset.

Cllr Eddie May has resigned from the council because he felt that most councillors were not being involved in the decision making process. Also meetings are cancelled when councillors have not been informed of the meeting in the first place. How many other meetings have been held in secret?

It seems strange to me that the system that is in use in West Somerset is supported fully by the Tories, but they feel that as a minority party they don't want to take place in the cabinet at county level.

The hypocrisy of the Tories does not surprise me, it is symptomatic of them that unless they can have the ball to play their game, they don't want to play at all.

Tony Bowden,

Vice-Chairman,

Watchet Town Council.
