YOUNG people from West Somerset and beyond helped to keep a centuries old traditional alive when they paraded through Dunster to celebrate St George's Day.

The parade, which is now organised by the Minehead Division Guides, involved over 300 rainbows, brownies, beavers, cubs, guides, scouts and explorer scouts, together with their leaders.

They gathered at Dunster Castle before parading through the village to St George's Church on Sunday.

There, they took part in a service led by the Rev Caroline Ralph and were also able to reaffirm their laws and promises.

Afterwards, the organisers reintroduced the official dismissing of the parade in the High Street.

"It was an amazing sight to behold, the High Street filled with the young people all dressed smartly in their uniforms with the unit flags flying; a truly spectacular sight," said Victoria Hatch of Minehead Division Guides.

She added: "We would like to express our sincere thanks to the National Trust for supporting and helping us with the parade, allowing us to use the magnificent castle grounds.

"Also to the Lions Club for being our parade marshals and the police who supported us with stopping the traffic and allowing us to dismiss in the High Street."
