MORE than 300 people visited St Mary Magdalene Church at the weekend to see Winsford Remembers, an exhibition commemorating the sacrifices of villagers during World War One. Displays included mini biographies of those who served and a map of the battlefields where they fought and, in some cases, lost their lives. More than 60 men left the village to serve King and country - 12 were injured,14 were killed and some never returned. There were also old photographs, poems, music and a flower festival, culminating in a Sunday afternoon church service to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War. The flowers were arranged by parishioners and the service was introduced by David Godsal before being taken by Rev David Weir. There was a reflection by Rev David Coates and a performance of The Call by the Exmoor benefice choir, a piece especially written and composed by Brenda Staples for the event. The commemoration weekend raised "substantial" funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Help for Heroes. The organisers thanked everyone who visited the event and those who gave their time and family memoirs to make it a success. Photo: Paul Scullion
