A cheque was presented to Donna and Paul for their fund to raise awareness of mitochondrial disease and cardiomyopathy, and support organisations researching cures.
The money was raised purely from an honesty stall outside Mothers’ Club secretary Anne Reeder’s home in Liddymore Road.
Neighbours, parents from the local school and the whole community kept up a steady stream of donations for the honesty stall from books to toys and bric a brac, and buyers popped the money through Anne’s letterbox.
“People have been very generous and the Stevens were absolutely delighted,” said Anne.
“They are a local couple similar in age to many of our own children, and we wanted to do something to help, especially coming up to Christmas for them.
“They have such a positive attitude doing something for future generations – others will reap the benefit of this lasting legacy.”
The Mothers’ Club has nearly 40 members: “We’re more like the grannies club now,” said Anne.
It is having a big push for its biggest fundraising event of the year, a coffee morning in aid of the Neo-Natal Ward at Musgrove Park Hospital, for an incubator for babies in need of special care.
The coffee morning is on Tuesday (December 15) from 9.30am to noon at the Methodist School Room, Harbour Road.
The club chooses a nominated charity each year and last year raised over £1,000 with 100 people taking part in the coffee morning fundraiser.
It has also given £100 each to other nominated charities – CLIC Sargent, The Conquest Riding Centre for the Disabled, CLOWNS and Oxfam.
