ARSON is the suspected cause of a fire which destroyed a caravan and two sheds at a closed holiday park in Helwell Bay, Watchet.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service started receiving multiple emergency calls alerting it to the blaze shortly before 8.30pm on Wednesday night.

Two fire crews were immediately sent from Williton who found sheds on site were alight. At one point the blaze spread to involve nearby power lines.

A third fire engine was called in from Minehead to help along with a supporting officer, and as the scale of the incident grew, another appliance from Minehead was deployed.

A water carrier was also requested from Bridgwater, but a suitable hydrant was found nearby so the bowser was stood down en route.

Residents living near Helwell Bay were advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

The fire crews used four sets of breathing apparatus, three attack jets, one hose reel jet, and a thermal imaging camera and gas monitor throughout the incident, which was put out after three hours.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Crews believed this fire to have been set deliberately so police have been made aware."

The Helwell Bay caravan park with 19 holiday homes closed in 2019.
