SIR — The many reasons that the proposed Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant is being reviewed should include the fact that there is no plan for the management of the waste it will produce.
It is proposed that, as the waste will be too hot and radioactive to be moved for up to 150 years, it will be stored in ponds on the site.
As there is no local authority willing to host a long-term geological “disposal” site (nuclear waste can only be stored for thousands of years, not disposed of), West Somerset will become the national nuclear waste dump by default, despite general agreement that it is not geologically suited to this role.
As sea levels are predicted to rise due to climate change, the low cliffs will hardly provide any protection and a problem with no solution will have been created.
Demand for electricity is falling yearly and can definitely be met by solar power as the sun provides enough power in 90 minutes to meet the world’s energy needs for a year.
This means that this toxic and dangerous situation will be bequeathed to our future generations for no good reason.
