SIR — Please can I urge Watchet Town Council to revise the Watchet Cemetery Regulation Policy, paying particular attention to the children’s cemetery?

The policy strictly states that a child’s headstone must be of a standard shape and size.

Whilst I understand there may need to be restrictions to the size of a headstone, I think there should be more flexibility on what shape should be permitted.

I cannot think of any reasons why having a teddy-shaped headstone of a standard size on a child’s grave would be a problem; there are no health and safety issues nor can I imagine this would offend anyone.

I have been told that the reason for these restrictions is because there needs to be rules in place to avoid those who want excessive or inappropriate headstones.

My suggestion is that you adopt a policy, which many other parishes have, where you would approve headstones on a case by case basis.

The current policy has unnecessary restrictions, which at a time of such grief, seem somewhat insensitive.
