SIR — I was appalled to read the letter in last week's Free Press regarding David Gliddon's plans for a supermarket in Williton suggesting he is only after this for retirement money. As the writer said, Mr Gliddon might have enough money to retire but he chooses to carry on working. I think some people have very short memories. If it was not for Mr Gliddon, we would not have kept the district council offices in Williton. He bought the property in Minehead which stopped the offices going there. This brought him in front of the standards board, and I believe after the district council offices had been started in Williton he sold the Minehead property at a loss. When we were all fighting to a get a SureStart building near St Peter's School, Mr Gliddon paid out of his own money for architects to draw up plans for land adjoining the school. We might not have got it, but it was not for lack of trying many people, but it was Mr Gliddon who put his hand in his pocket. Don't you think that if Mr Gliddon wanted the easy way out he would just have built houses, as he obtained planning permission for them years ago. The costs for architects, solicitors and consultants relating to the supermarket, plus his personal time, must be colossal. Mr Gliddon is a local man who, I believe, thinks the scheme is best for Williton's future. I'm sure he also hopes to make a profit. Diane Hooper, Station Road, Williton.
