WIVELISCOMBE Horticultural Society's annual show next Saturday, August 20, has been saved from disaster. Somerset Highway officials were planning to close part of South Street for a fortnight from Monday so that Wessex Water could install a much needed storm drain. This could have caused havoc for the show as the road closure would have meant a detour of some six miles for many visitors. Bur Somerset Highway authorities have agreed to postpone the roadworks until the Monday after the show, August 22, so that it can go ahead as planned. Horticultural society chairman Kate Harris said she was extremely grateful to Somerset Highways for taking local activities into account and rescheduling the works. This year's Wiveliscombe Flower Show will be opened at 2.30pm by Anne Lady Farrington, a frequent exhibitor in the past. Attractions include Wiveliscombe Town Band, sideshows, teas, raffle and stalls plus all the flowers, fruit, vegetables, cookery and handicrafts entered into the show. Further information is available from secretary Jenny Donnelly on 01984 624492.
