RACEHORSE Golden Ace will add a touch of ‘stardust’ to the annual Brompton Regis Show and Gymkhana, which is now in its 71st year.
Trained in the Brompton Regis yard of Jeremy Scott, Golden Ace earned a handsome sum for many local residents when she romped to victory in the 2025 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, coming in at odds of 25-1.
The seven-year-old mare, which also won £255,000 prize money for the stables, will be a guest of honour at the village’s gymkhana, which Mr Scott and his family have supported for decades.
Hundreds of people from the parish and other areas of Exmoor are expected to join the crowds and to enjoy a day out while raising money for good causes locally.
The event will be held in the cricket field on August 9 and Golden Ace will be in attendance between 1 pm and 1.30 pm.
Show chairman Charles Stewart-Smith said: “It is both a thrill and an honour to have our local hero attending the show so they can support a Brompton Regis great.
“Jeremy’s family have supported the show almost since its beginning.
“I know just how proud Jeremy’s parents would have been to witness an event that will bring pride to all in the community, as well as gratitude from those who took a financial windfall from Golden Ace’s victory.”
Mr Scott, whose training grounds lie between Brompton Regis and Upton, overlooking Wimbleball Lake, said: “Golden Ace is rightfully the hero of the day, I just helped her along.
“But this creates yet another moment of happiness among many that came with Golden Ace crossing the winning line.
“The Brompton Regis show is always a great day out for all the family and community and Golden Ace will add to the warm and welcoming atmosphere, as well as the chance to help raise money for local community groups.”
Mr Scott will be interviewed about his success by another local hero, Les Silverlock, a well-known voice as master of ceremonies, bringing wit and wisdom to liven up many shows across Exmoor.
The show committee will be making a donation to the Exmoor Young Voices charity with which Les works to help young residents find sustainable work and life opportunities across the area.
Since it began in 1954, Brompton Regis Gymkhana and Show has become one of the largest shows put on by any of the small Exmoor communities, with nearly 1,000 people attending, both locals and visitors from all over the world.
Last year, a record of nearly £8,000 was raised for good causes in the community, from repairing church steps in Withiel Florey to Christmas wreath-making for the whole parish, support for the community-owned village shop, and maintenance of the village green.
A limited number of trade stalls relevant to the show are being introduced for the first time this year, ranging from commercial stands for horse and dog products, to charity outlets for South West Wildlife Trust, and a traditional hedge laying demonstration.
