WEST Somerset residents took part in a nationwide banana-eating event to raise awareness of Fairtrade goods on Friday.

People attending the Christians Together Lent lunches in the Church Hall, Bancks Street, Minehead, were encouraged to eat a banana as part of the menu.

The event was part of a nationwide world record attempt to promote Fairtrade bananas and involved more than 380,000 people across the UK.

Minehead's Co-operative supermarket donated Fairtrade bananas for the lunch, which saw people up and down the country eating a Fairtrade banana in the 24 hours between midday on Friday and midday on Saturday.
