SOMERSET Day celebrations over the weekend of May 11 promise to be bigger and better than ever before.

Groups and organisations across the county are taking part, and there is still time to organise an event.

The first Somerset Day was held in 2015, following a public vote that chose May 11. The date marksKing Alfred the Great’s routing of the Vikings from his stronghold in the Somerset marshes in May 878.

It is organised by not-for-profit community interest company, Passion for Somerset, with help from sponsors and volunteer supporters.

Nigel Muers-Raby, chairman of Passion for Somerset, said: “As this special day gets closer, we’re really thrilled with the response we’ve had from groups and organisations across the county.

“Each year, momentum grows as more people get behind Somerset Day, and this year it’s safe to say this is absolutely the best year yet!

“With food and craft fairs, exhibitions, competitions, concerts and, of course, tea parties, we’re hoping everyone in the county has a chance to celebrate all that’s great about the county.

“With the support of some of the county’s leading businesses, we’ve been able to spread the message far and wide.”

New initiatives for this year include The Great Somerset Tea Party in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice, and a social media World Cup of Somerset led by the county council.

“The Somerset Day movement is definitely growing, and we’re expecting a real buzz,” said Nigel.
