SIR — I write to allay rumours that seem to be circulating about the future of RNLI fundraising in West Somerset.

Although the Lifeboat Guild as the prime organiser of events and collections is closing at the end of the year, the shop at the lifeboat station will continue to open as previously and the collection boxes placed throughout the community will still be serviced.

The lifeboat crew and others at the station are planning a variety of events for next year, starting with a revival of the Lifeboat Dance at the Hobby Horse in February, and a Lifeboat Flag Day in the spring.

Earlier this year Minehead's lifeboats carried out their 1000th launch since the station opened in 1901. Records show that 709 people have been rescued and 324 lives saved.

These rescues would not have been possible without the tireless hard work of the guild and other supporters.

Everyone attached to the station, and particularly the crew, are very grateful for the tremendous support they have received over the years.

Bryan Stoner,

Chairman,

Minehead Lifeboat.
