RESIDENTS living at Silvermead, Alcombe, have been showing off their organic garden that provides many of them with vegetables during much of the year. Silvermead is one of Magna West Somerset's two 'extra care' housing schemes, owned and managed by them. Designed for the vulnerable, elderly or those with mild learning disabilities, the scheme still allows its residents to live independently. Elaine Floyd, manager at Silvermead, said: "One of our residents started the garden just over a year ago and it has been a big success. "Unfortunately, they moved away and we no longer have anyone who is up to the work needed to keep the plot ticking over. "It was so nice to see, though - we couldn't just let it disappear, so my husband and I have been keeping it going." The garden has proved very popular with the residents who, during their weekly coffee mornings, are able to buy the produce that is grown on the plot. "Everything we grow is organic," said Elaine. We have potatoes, onions and runner beans as well as tomatoes and cucumbers, to name but a few. "Apart from it being a joy for residents to see and get hold of fresh vegetables, it also helps promote healthy eating among our residents."
