FREE Press staffer John Lockyer is celebrating his success in winning a place in the prestigious London Marathon - at the sixth attempt.

John, our special publications manager, has been in training for his upcoming moment of glory at the April event since January.

And, currently clocking up around 50 miles a week, he hopes to complete the 26.2 mile course in just under four hours.

But no matter how long it takes, John is determined that his athletic efforts will bring in much needed cash for charity.

He will be running under the banner of the Anthony Nolan Trust, which manages and recruits bone marrow donors to help adults and children with leukaemia or other life-threatening conditions.

Although 56-year-old John has been a keen runner for most of his life, this will be his first marathon.

"It's going to be pretty daunting. I've always run to keep fit but I've never run this far before," he said.

He is hoping he will be among the 40 per cent of the 35,000-strong field of runners who aim to finish the event in under four hours - behind the top-flight competitors but ahead of the fun runners.

To kick-start his fundraising, former professional musician John will be playing at a charity live music night at the Wyndham Arms, Williton next Saturday (February 27).

The event will include a raffle and will run from 8pm till late.

All the money raised will go to the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Anyone willing to sponsor John can pick up a form at the Free Press offices in Williton and Minehead, where there are also collection jars on the counters.

"I hope people will give generously, but no matter how large or small the amount, every penny counts," said John.
