STUDENTS from Minehead's Foxes Academy catering college celebrated their achievements at a special end-of-term presentation afternoon.

The young people at Foxes all have learning difficulties and learn to live independently while studying courses in hospitality and catering at the college.

Awards were presented for outstanding progress over the last term, with 14 students honoured for making huge improvements in team work, self-confidence and attainment.

Two special awards were also presented during the ceremony for best newcomer and for the most outstanding learner.

Academy founder director Sue Jenkins presented the award for best newcomer to Daniel Alexander.

Daniel joined the academy in September and had already overcome barriers with communication and was learning to go shopping and how to make meals with his friends.

He had also spent time training in the college's kitchen, learning basic skills in food hygiene and team work.

The second special award for the most outstanding student was presented to Alan Bunker by Maureen Tyler-Moore, a co-director of Foxes.

Alan, 17, was considered to be an exemplary student and was working towards and NVQ in food preparation.

He had learnt how to keep himself safe, budget and plans his pare time and to look after himself in a bedsit.

Staff praised him for approaching all his training with enthusiasm and said he enjoyed learning alongside his friends.

The ceremony culminated with a performance of The Wizard of Oz by members of the Foxes Drama Group.

Friends and family were encouraged to join in the musical numbers and thanks were given to support staff Jim Crawley, Kirsty Salter, Sally Thorne and Bev King for creating the scenery and costumes.
