BOAT owners in Watchet are driving a bid to resolve what they describe as the biggest threat to the future of Watchet’s marina.

Watchet Boat Owners Association went public just a few weeks ago with its concerns over the increasing level of mud in the facility.

Now the organisation is spearheading a meeting in the hope of securing a long-term solution to tackle the problem.

It has invited stakeholders from West Somerset Council and local traders group WACET to marina operator Tim Taylor and social enterprise company the Onion Collective to a discussion forum on September 10.

WBOA secretary Ray Ventura said the aim was to bring all stakeholders together as a working group to assess the information currently available on the issue and to try to understand if a practical solution could be developed using existing knowledge and expertise.

“There have been many discussions, thoughts and reports in an attempt to manage not only the current situation but to look at what could be done to effect a future long-term management plan,” he said.

“This is one of those unusual situations where all invitees have the same objective – ie controlling the mud in the marina and outer harbour.

“It is not intended to over-analyse any mistakes of the past but to work together to move forwards.

“We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying to make this initiative work and in doing so convert the public money that was provided for this regeneration project into a successful marina for Watchet.”

The meeting is expected to look at a range of issues from dredging plans for both the outer harbour – which is the responsibility of the district council – and the marina, as well as mud levels and any action that could be taken to control the rising tide of silt.

It is expected to hear from the marina operator, the district council and experts.

Mr Ventura said oceanographer Dr Rob Kirby had already agreed to attend, along with Royal Yachting Association representative Don Sutherland.
