TAUNTON MP Jeremy Browne has been appointed as a Foreign Affairs spokesman for the Liberal Democrats in Parliament. Mr Browne is a member of the team led by Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader and Shadow Foreign Secretary Sir Menzies Campbell. The role was given to Mr Browne by Liberal Democrat Leader Charles Kennedy. Sir Menzies said: "Jeremy Browne is a rising new talent in Parliament and I am delighted that he is now taking a significant role as a Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman. "He will be a valuable contributor to debates in Parliament and the development of policy." Mr Browne said the future security and prosperity of the country depends on the foreign policy decisions taken by the Government. "Some of the greatest challenges confronting the British people are international." He said Britain needed to: * Lead the debate for a more effective and democratic European Union. * Beware of the danger of long-term entanglement in Iraq. * Adapt to the growing economic strength of China and India. * Tackle the threat of terrorism. * Raise living standards for people suffering desperate poverty in developing countries. "There are many charities and voluntary organisations in Taunton Deane that aim to improve the condition of people around the world. "The public reaction in our area to the tsunami disaster was an inspiring indication of the willingness of local people to help. "I will continue to work closely with groups in Taunton Deane like Oxfam and Amnesty International as part of this new role."
