SIR — Stephanie Oliver (Your Letters July 25) wonders why we hear about fly-tipping in West Somerset, attributing it to laziness on the part of the culprits. I don't believe that to be the case. Car and van drivers regularly put time and effort into transporting their unwanted debris as far as halfway up our beautiful country lane then carefully depositing it alongside the bank of the River Avill. No it is not laziness - it is an unwillingness to pay the fees for placing hardcore (£2.90 per 50kg) and tyres (up to £4.20 each) in our re-cycling centres. Incidentally, these sites are not all free to enter. Dulverton charges £2 per visit. You can arrange for bulky items such as refrigerators and sofas to be collected from the doorstep, but it costs over £38 for up to three items. So that is why you hear about fly-tipping.
