A FLORISTS in Exeter heard that a group of elderly people who live alone in West Somerset were missing their regular get-together for Sunday afternoon tea – so they sent each of them a bunch of flowers.

Christine Payne, Minehead, Exmoor and the Quantocks co-ordinator of Re-engage, formerly known as Contact the Elderly, wrote to Barn Florist.

“I asked if, despite the fact they normally only sold to trade, they might be able to offer me a discount on sufficient cut flowers to make up 25 bunches that could be given to a group of elderly people.

“My elderly guests, aged between 75 and 94, were really missing their tea parties and the companionship they offered, and for some their only opportunity to go out.”

Christine added: “Imagine my delight when Phil and Grace from Barn Florist not only agreed to help but also to provide me with 25 bunches of fresh flowers at no cost!

“Two large boxes of absolutely beautiful white daisy chrysanthemums arrived at my home on Saturday morning and were then swiftly delivered across West Somerset by some of my volunteers to my unsuspecting guests, much to their surprise and delight.

“The response I got was overwhelming, many of my tea party guests saying that they were at a point where the lockdown was beginning to dampen their spirits.

“Despite receiving regular phone calls so that they did not feel forgotten, they felt in need of something to perk them up. There is nothing quite like a bunch of flowers to do just that especially when it is unexpected and left as a surprise on your doorstep.

“It was such a very generous thing for Barn Florist to do and one that created such happy smiles across the faces of many otherwise lonely elderly people.”
