FIREFIGHTING crews from both Dulverton and Bampton tackled an incident on Exmoor involving a lorry carrying glass bottles for recycling.
The lorry driver, who was uninjured, reported smoke coming from the vehicle’s dashboard as he drove along the B3223 near Winsford.
The driver was able to safely pull the vehicle over to the side of the road at the time of call to await arrival of the fire and rescue teams.
The crews found the lorry was ‘well alight’ when they reached the scene and set to work with two firefighters donning breathing apparatus and using a hose reel jet.
An additional safety jet was later used to help prevent the fire spreading further.
Environmental protection equipment was used to dam up and prevent oil and diesel from entering a nearby drain/watercourse.
The cab of the lorry was completely destroyed by the fire, which was believed to have started accidentally and took more than two hours to bring under control.
A Somerset County Council highways team closed the road to traffic while the incident was ongoing and later made it safe to reopen.
