EXCITING events are in the pipeline for the forthcoming summer holiday season, members of the newly-constituted Minehead Events Group said last week.

Volunteers sought to help with one of Exmoor's most spectacular natural phenomenons“We have an excellent track record and we want to build on that strength and take it to the next level,” a member of the group’s committee, Dave Jackson, told West Somerset council’s scrutiny committee last Thursday.
The committee supported a recommendation that the group, which since 2012 has been under the district council ‘umbrella’, should in future be an independent body while still working closely with other organisations.
This brought doubts from Minehead town councillors about whether the group would be accountable. There was also criticism about lack of consultation over the observation wheel last summer.
Over the past four years, the group has organised eight festivals - four summer, two harbour and two winter – and car rallies, supported the Exmoor food festival and brought last summer’s observation wheel to Minehead.
Praising what the group had done, deputy leader Cllr Mandy Chilcott said: “Success breeds success. It’s time for them to fly.”
