ALMOST 100 'evacuee' children will be arriving at West Somerset Railway's Minehead station tomorrow afternoon (Saturday). Wearing 1940s' clothes, the children will be following the same route as hundreds of real evacuees who came to West Somerset over 60 years ago during World War Two. And some of those real evacuees will be there to meet them before they all enjoy a 'street party' tea on the station. The event is part of The Songs That Won The War, a series of activities commemorating the end of World War Two. Also tomorrow, there will be a procession through Minehead's main street, with members of the Royal British Legion and other groups taking part. Wartime entertainment will be provided on the seafront and station, and visitors can also join in the street party. All the entertainment is free. The evacuees' train arrives at 5.15pm and the entertainment, which is free, will be put on by, among others, West Somerset Morris Men, Minehead Middle School Choir, the Devon and Somerset George Formby Society, Minehead Dance Club, Tiverton Town Band and The Songs That Won The War singers.
